Whether you’ve been away on business or your schedule has left you with less time to spend with your family it is very common to find that during the holidays you start to notice changes in your loved ones. During the holidays families come together and spend time with each other. Often it is during this time of the year that I receive calls expressing concern over declines in their Mother, Father, or other loved ones health. If you are noticing that your family member seems more frail, weaker, tired, more forgetful or unstable… this is the time to get involved.
Things to look for:
- Weight loss or gain
- Looking Significantly Older Quickly
- Unsteady Gait
- Weakness/Difficulty getting up for a chair or couch
- Complaints of pain
- Complaints of being tired
- Sleeping More
- Depression- Sadness, expressions of loss
- Increased confusion
- Anxiety- frequent questions, needing reassurance
- Increase or Decrease in Sleeping Patterns
- Bruising/abrasions- may be a sign of unreported falls
- Other changes in health, Shortness of breath, edema, swelling.
Many times families notice changes but are reluctant to seek assistance or help. This can often lead to more severe outcomes such as a fall at home leaving their loved one injured, in pain, disabled or even lead to a premature death. Early intervention into the care and well-being of a loved one can help to avoid such a devastating outcome.
